Miami’s Contemporary Art Community Joins Together to Launch First Annual Wynwood Art Fair Benefiting the Lotus House Women’s Shelter

A Contemporary Street Art Happening of Unprecedented Artistic Dimension

Wynwood Art District, Miami (May 11, 2011) –
In a sweep of extraordinary solidarity, Miami’s contemporary art community is coming together to launch the first annual Wynwood Art Fair, a ground-breaking, performance-based, contemporary art fair like no other. More than a fair, the Wynwood Art Fair will be a dazzling three-day, contemporary art "happening" of unprecedented artistic dimension as artists from Miami and across the country explore virtually every form of artistic medium, creating spontaneous works of art "live" with fair participants. Fun, thought-provoking, educational and interactive, the Wynwood Art Fair goes beyond traditional notions of contemporary art fairs, inviting fairgoers of all ages to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, think and above all, make art! "The Wynwood Art Fair will show contemporary art can be fun, interactive, engaging and uplifting. We know of no other art fair like it in the country and virtually every major contemporary art institution in Miami has leaped at the chance to create interactive, performance and visual art exhibitions in this extraordinary collaboration," said Constance Collins Margulies, founder and director of the Wynwood Art Fair and its beneficiary Lotus House Women’s Shelter.

The illustrious list of participants in the Fair include the Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art/North Miami, Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Bass Museum, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and Wolfsonian Museum, along with art, theater and music departments of Florida International University, Barry University and University of Miami. They are joined by the blockbuster private collections of Rosa and Carlos De La Cruz, Ella Cisneros/CIFO, Hadley Martin Fisher and Martin Z. Margulies, as well as Miami’s premier contemporary art galleries, including Bernice Steinbaum, Diana Lowenstein, Spinello Projects, Diet Gallery, Kelley Roy Gallery, Dorsch Gallery, Dot Fiftyone Gallery, Charest Weinberg Gallery, Center for Visual Communication, Dina Mitrani Gallery and more. Miami’s artist residencies will also be well represented with exhibitions of LegalArt, Art Center South Florida, Locust Projects and the Bakehouse Art Complex.

At the Wynwood Art Fair, fair-goers will have an opportunity to not only meet the artists, but in many cases, work along side them and be a part of the creative process unfolding. Veteran and nationally renowned artists, such as Trajal Harrell, Ellen Fisher, Ben Fain, Marc Grubstein, Steve Johnson, Lee Walton, Jerry Misrach and David Ellis will be flying in for the three days of street festivities to perform, play and collaborate in the making of art with local Miami favorites Primary Flight, Sleeper, Buda, and Funner Projects, among many others. Their mutual goal - to surprise, engage, delight and interact with fair goers - all the while raising awareness of Lotus House and its important work on behalf of women and children in need. The streets and street art of the Wynwood Art District will offer a unique and fitting backdrop to the artistic talent of this cutting edge street fair.

"The Wynwood Art Fair is highly innovative, exploring new territory in the contemporary art world on every level - performance based, interactive, educational, uplifting, and including virtually every form of artistic medium in contemporary art today. I don’t think anything like this has been tried nationally or internationally before," says Nick Korniloff of Art Miami, one of many lead sponsors of the Fair. "Miami’s contemporary art community is really breaking new ground on the international art scene with the Wynwood Art Fair," he adds.

The Wynwood Art Fair is unique on the national and international scene for another reason: The proceeds of this coming together of art and community will benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter. Admission is $10 per person (children under 10 free) and all proceeds, sponsorships, and a VIP launch party and benefit art auction will help provide meals, health care services, job readiness training, counseling, social services, and arts and enrichment programming for the over 100 women and children served daily at Lotus House upon the completion of its new expansion.

"Lotus House is deeply grateful to all of the artists, art institutions, sponsors and the City of Miami for being so courageous in their commitment of creative talent and resources to this extraordinary collaborative initiative to make a difference," said Lindsay Merrill, Outreach Director of Lotus House. Lead sponsors making the Fair possible include the City of Miami, Sports and Entertainment Authority, Sotheby’s, Bank of America, Eulen America, Hadley Martin Fisher Collection, Art Miami, Jerry’s Artarama, Miami.com and The Miami Herald, Miami Magazine and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse.

The Fair’s guest curators include New York-based Kimberly Marrero and Miami natives, Antonia Wright and Giselle DeVera.
