5,000 Hearts Campaign
The Love Yourself Project
Curated by Kimberly Marrero
The Love Yourself Project is pleased to present a collection of origami hearts from our core public program The 5,000 Hearts Campaign that began in 2010. Each mixed media hand made heart contains a personal inscription of self-love, from five thousand New Yorkers who took part in this very inspiring program.
The Love Yourself Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts and education organization providing community programs which promote self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-esteem and skill building. It is our belief that with a strong relationship to the self, every individual can contribute to a future with loving regard for all living beings and the environment.
Beginning Nov 19, 2010, the Love Yourself team took to the streets and subways of New York City greeting people with messages of kindness and love, distributing over 500 Love Yourself stickers and hand-folded hearts, encouraging people to engage in a conversation about self-love. Since then, similar events have taken place throughout the US, in Pakistan, Paris, Luxembourg, West Africa, the Netherlands, Australia, Iceland, England and Stockholm. LYP has distributed over 750,000 stickers around the globe.
In 2011, the Project began its work with early education programing beginning at The Earth School in NYC where our volunteers lead origami heart-making workshops and facilitated discussions about what it means to ‘love yourself’. The origami hearts were featured in the “1,000 Hearts Exhibition” at the Michael Mut Gallery and in the New Museum’s City of Ideas project.
We have since expanded our programming to include workshops geared towards individuals of all ages, cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. With the support of our many generous sponsors we are able to build upon this very important work we do.
